Exploring the Harmony of Stillness and Movement

Featuring delicate fine lines paired with the striking contrast of red and black that vividy comes to life on the skin, tattoo artist Özge captivates audiences with her highly distinctive vision. With a background in contemporary art and painting, she continuously pushes the boundaries of various artistic genres. The designs born from her hands carry a certain surrealist quality, yet remain imbued with a definitive sense of warmth.

In this feature, we spoke with Özge about her journey into the world of tattooing, her unique sensibility for color, and the deep passion that drives her craft.

How She Got Her Start in Tattooing

Having majored in painting at university and studied diverse contemporary art forms—such as ceramics and photography—in graduate school, she was already walking the path of fine art. Then one day, her father approached her with an unexpected proposal: he wanted her to give him a tattoo. At first, she says she hesitated a little, unsure if she could truly come to love tattooing.

“Then my father said, ‘I’ll buy you a tattoo machine, so please tattoo me.’ Hearing that, I smiled and agreed to give it a try.”

As it turned out, her father didn’t end up buying the machine, so she beganAt first, she was hesitant, unsure whether tattooing was something she could truly come to love.

“Then my father convinced me by promising to buy me a tattoo machine. Hearing that, I smiled and agreed to give it a try. In the end, he never bought me the tattoo machine—but I did give him two tattoos.
Looking back now, she is incredibly grateful that she learned tattooing and that her father first suggested the idea and encouraged her. His support gave her the confidence to take her first step into the world of tattooing.

Özge Kul “Bits and Peace” June 2025
Introducing expressions of tattooing and digital art, she has released a group of works that weave the echoes of history into modern visual expressions. She mainly expresses ancient Middle Eastern myths, beasts, and gods by fusing modern illustration with traditional mosaic techniques. She expresses a world where the past and the present coexist in a delicate balance.

While developing her career as a tattoo artist, she continued her exploration as a contemporary artist. This culminated in her first solo exhibition in Philadelphia, USA, in which she showcased a series of mosaic works. The tattoo career she built had become intergrated into her multidisciplinary art practice.

The Warmth Born from Black, Red, and Skin

The black-and-red palette that has become a signature of Özge’s work was not planned from the beginning. Instead, it developed through experimentation over time.
Before tattooing, she was primarily interested in drawing with pen, pencil, and charcoal rather than working with color. As a result, her early tattoos were mostly black and grey. Later, she began exploring ways to introduce a single color into her work without losing the simplicity and openness she valued in drawing.

“I was less interested in realism and more interested in creating images that leave room for interpretation. Finding the right balance took a lot of experimentation.”

Through experimentation, she found that the use of grey-wash, combined with vivid red perfectly excentuated the warmth of the skin. Over time, this palette became a defining element of her work.
Rather than following a predetermined concept, her style evolved gradually through a drawing-based approach and ongoing exploration of the medium.

Harmony with Anatomy, Living Designs

When looking at her portfolio, her larger pieces (big pieces) elegantly catch the eye. Behind this is her unique commitment to enhancing the “anatomical structure (anatomy) of the body” through her tattoos.

“I don’t see tattooing as the act of just placing a small, isolated design alone on the skin. While incorporating abstract elements into the design, I want to blend it with the human body’s muscle lines, the beauty of the bones, and movement itself to create a sense of unity—as if the tattoo is ‘living together’ with the body. To achieve that, a certain scale and size become necessary.”

Sometimes she replaces the lines of human bones with the branches of flowers, and at other times, she merges the curvature of muscles with the form of a bird’s body. The spider lily piece she previously created on a client’s back was also placed along the muscle lines to complement the inherent beauty of that part of the body. Rather than placing an independent design on the skin, it is a sensation of transforming (shifting) the body itself into something else beautiful. This is precisely why a sense of scale capable of embracing the physical body is essential to her work.

The Motion and Stillness Seen Through Surrealism

When discussing Özge’s artistic expression, the influence of Surrealism from great masters like Salvador Dalí and René Magritte is inseparable. However, the deepest essence she drew from their masterpieces was not the bizarre combination of motifs, but rather the “unique sense of stillness” within them.

“When I express Surrealism, what I value most is ‘stillness.’ It’s a sensation as if no wind is blowing, and even the air itself doesn’t exist. A world where everything is perfectly suspended, and even the very concept of time seems to have vanished.”

At the core of her tattoos lies this overwhelming silence—one that breaks the rules of reality and conventional stereotypes of “how things should be,” while allowing the contrast of opposing concepts to coexist. It is likely because of this underlying philosophy of stillness that her favorite motif, the “bird,” carries an air of mystery while bearing a multitude of meanings and surrealistic emotions.

“A aging tattoo is just like a scene from an old anime or a faded photograph. The artwork slowly blends into the client’s skin, and as time goes by, it gains an even deeper character and atmosphere. I believe that this process itself is the true charm of my work.”

Showing Magritte’s Time Transformed on her smartphone screen, she explained her inspiration drawn from how a steam locomotive suddenly emerges from a fireplace into a sterile room, yet remains captured in absolute silence without any smoke or roaring sound. Just like that painting, she intentionally stops the movement of motifs that are naturally meant to be in motion. She shares that she “likes the sensation of time being frozen (frozen feeling).”

This overwhelming silence—which breaks reality’s rules and stereotypes of “how things should be,” while allowing contrasting concepts to coexist—lies at the very core of her tattoos. The reason why her favorite motif, the “bird,” carries an air of mystery while bearing many meanings and surrealistic emotions is likely because this philosophy of stillness lies at its foundation.

Beyond Boundaries: A New Challenge

Through her current combination of red, black, and organic motifs, Özge has already established a firm signature as an artist. Yet, as a contemporary artist, her gaze is already fixed far beyond that existing framework. While she expresses a desire to create pieces with an even higher purity of surrealism in the future, she happily shared a new sign of this evolution: she recently acquired a new color of ink.

“Actually, I recently got some ‘blue ink.’ From now on, I want to start practicing and challenging myself to see how I can express this vivid and beautiful blue on the skin instead of red.”

If the striking accent that red has carried until now is replaced by a deep and beautiful “blue,” what kind of new chemical reaction will occur on the skin? Her experimentation—breaking reality to construct a new world—never stops, even here at the Tokyo studio. At the intersection of the physical body and art, anticipation builds for what kind of artworks she will weave next.
