タトゥーを始めたきっかけ
How She Got Her Start in Tattooing
Midoriがタトゥーの世界へと惹かれた背景には、幼少期から育んできた民族カルチャーへの深い興味がありました。
「家族の影響もあり、子供の頃からずっと民族文化に惹かれていました。世界中にある様々なスタイルの中でも、タイの仏教タトゥーである『サクヤン』や『ポリネシアンタトゥー』、そして沖縄の『ハジチ』など、その土地の歴史や生活に深く根付いたタトゥーに、言葉にできない神秘的な魅力を感じていたんです」
大人になってからも、彼女にとってタトゥーはどこか神聖で、特別な世界でした。しかし、THE GOOD CAT SCRATCHで共に活動するWinigreeniやTakkakeiとの出会い、そしていくつかの大切なタイミングが重なったことが、彼女はタトゥーを始めたきっかけとなりました。

「墨流しとは、日本古来から続く伝統技法で、水面に色を浮かべ、水や風といった自然の力を借りながら模様を描いていくものです。水面で生まれる模様は、二度と同じ形を作ることができない『一期一会』の儚さを持っています。その『一度しか出会えない水面模様』を、生涯を共にする『一生のタトゥー』として肌に刻み込む。この対照的な美しさをテーマに、水の流麗な動きを身体に纏うことができたら、とても素敵ではないかと考えました」
Behind what makes Midori’s tattoos truly one-of-a-kind lies the eleven years she has dedicated entirely to perfecting her craft as a Suminagashi artist. Driven by a powerful desire to evolve this traditional technique—which serves as her core foundation and life itself—into a completely new medium, she began translating its essence into tattoo designs.
“Suminagashi is an ancient Japanese technique where ink is floated on the surface of water, allowing the forces of nature, like water and wind, to help shape the patterns. The designs born upon the water possess a fleeting, once-in-a-lifetime ephemerality—a form that can never be replicated exactly the same way twice. Inscribing this ‘never-to-be-repeated water pattern’ onto the skin as a ‘lifelong tattoo’ to be carried forever—I thought it would be incredibly beautiful to weave this contrasting aesthetic into a theme, allowing people to wear the fluid grace of water on their bodies.”

“If you create solely with your mind, it lacks intrigue; yet if you simply let the colors flow without thought, it loses cohesion. It is only when both my ‘intent’ and the ‘forces of nature’ come together in perfect balance that I can craft a piece that surpasses my own imagination. That is where the true allure of Suminagashi lies.”
The Suminagashi that Midori has dedicated herself to is an art form born from the blending of “intent”—which controls the final composition—and the “forces of nature,” such as water and wind.

普段の平面作品では、壮大な自然からインスパイアを受けつつ「自然だけでは見ることができない美しさ」をテーマに、水面の世界を写し取っているMidori。しかし、舞台が「人の肌」へと移るとき、その表現はさらに緻密なものへと変化します。
「タトゥーデザインは人の肌に刻まれるため、身体に合うような、一つのデザインピースとして完結するように制作していきます。そのピースの中にも、デジタルでは作れないような水の流れや動きを感じてもらえるように意識しています」
コントロールしきれない自然のうねりに、アーティストとしての思考を乗せ、お客様の身体のラインへと寄り添わせていく。この「思考」と「自然の力」が重なり合うプロセスこそが、彼女の生み出す墨流しタトゥーの唯一無二の美しさなのです。
In her usual two-dimensional works, Midori captures the world of the water’s surface, drawing inspiration from grand nature under the theme of “a beauty that cannot be seen through nature alone.” However, when her canvas shifts to “human skin,” her expression transforms into something even more intricate.
“Since tattoo designs are inscribed on human skin, I create them so they harmonize with the body and culminate as a single, complete design piece. Within that piece, I am deeply conscious of allowing people to feel the flow and movement of water—the kind that can never be replicated through digital means.”
Infusing her artistic intent into the uncontrollable swells of nature, she gently aligns her work with the contours of the client’s body. This very process—where “intent” and the “forces of nature” intertwine—is the essence of the one-of-a-kind beauty found in her Suminagashi tattoos.
一針がつむぐ、手彫りの温もり
The Warmth of Hand-Poking, Woven Needle by Needle
彼女の施術の多くは、マシンではなく「ハンドポーク（手彫り）」によって行われます。そこには、彼女のルーツである民族カルチャーへのリスペクトと、表現への深いこだわりが息づいています。
「マシンで彫るよりも、よりアナログに一針ずつ時間をかけて刻んでいく感覚が、私の墨流しタトゥーの世界観に深くフィットすると感じています。自分の手で水面に模様を描き、自分の手でお客様の肌に一針一針、色を入れていく。指先からお客様の肌の感覚を捉え、同時に私の表現を伝えていく……。その対話の積み重ねが、作品をより特別で、温もりのあるものにしてくれると信じています。手刺繍の作品や刺し子を見たときに、ミシンとは違う手作業ならではの背景や温もりを感じて愛おしくなる感覚と、とてもよく似ていますね」

Most of her sessions are done through “hand-poking” rather than with a machine. Within this choice lives a deep respect for the tribal and ethnic cultures that form her roots, as well as her profound dedication to her expression.
“I feel that the sensation of inscribing needle by needle—taking time in a more analog way rather than tattooing with a machine—fits deeply with the world of my Suminagashi tattoos. Creating patterns on the water’s surface with my own hands, and then infusing color into the client’s skin needle by needle with my own hands… Feeling the texture of the client’s skin through my fingertips while simultaneously conveying my expression… I believe that the accumulation of this dialogue makes the artwork even more special and filled with warmth. It feels very similar to the endearing sensation you get when looking at hand embroidery or Sashiko, where you feel a background and warmth unique to manual work that is entirely different from a sewing machine.”
