A Journey Through Spring: Japan’s Cherry Blossom Tour

8 Selected Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots in Japan

The long-awaited cherry blossom season has arrived along with the soft spring breeze. From sophisticated tree-lined avenues in the city to temples and shrines that retain strong traces of history, and even overwhelming breathtaking views overlooking Mount Fuji. We present eight beautiful “Japanese Springs” that change their expression with every step you take.

5 Selected Cherry Blossom Spots in the Kanto Region

To begin, we introduce five renowned locations in the Kanto region, where urban sophistication and historical passion intersect.

1. Meguro River (Nakameguro)

Immediately after getting off at Nakameguro Station, about 800 Yoshino cherry trees spread out as far as the eye can see. The cherry blossom tunnel that continues for about 4km is so graceful that it makes you forget the bustle of the city. Stylish cafes and shops line the riverbanks, and at night, you can enjoy the magical illuminated cherry blossoms at night. The scenery where “Hana-ikada” (flower rafts) of petals dancing in the wind dye the river surface pink is overwhelming.

2. Yutenji Temple

Step slightly away from the glamor of Nakameguro and surrender yourself to the silence of history. Upon stepping into the precincts of “Yutenji,” the Niomon gate, a Tangible Cultural Property, is enveloped in cherry blossoms in full bloom, showing a beauty just like a single ancient painting. Petals dancing in the wind dye the stone pavement white, and a peaceful time flows along with the scent of incense in this famous spot known to those in the know.

3. Imperial Palace, Chidorigafuchi

Along the moat that retains the vestiges of Edo Castle, about 260 cherry trees spread their branches dynamically. The cherry blossom arches that seem to lean out to the water’s edge are truly breathtaking. Rowing out in a boat and looking up at the cherry blossoms from the water, they are close enough to reach, and you will be overwhelmed by their staggering vitality. It is a place where you can feel the noble and somehow nostalgic traditional beauty of Japan.

4. Hakone (Miyagino Hayakawa Embankment)

Along the Hayakawa River in Miyagino, Hakone, about 150 Yoshino cherry trees bloom in glory over approximately 600 meters. The moment of walking through the cherry blossom arch while listening to the murmur of the river is filled with a sense of liberation that makes you forget daily life. Light-ups are held at night, and the magical night cherry blossoms reflected on the river surface are the highlight of spring in Hakone. Because the altitude is higher than the city center, the charm is also that you can enjoy cherry blossom viewing for a longer period.

5. Arakurayama Sengen Park (Mt. Fuji Area)

Located in Fujiyoshida City, this park has a view that travelers from all over the world wish to see at least once. A five-story pagoda, Mt. Fuji, and pale cherry blossom pink. The moment all of these come into a single frame of vision with perfect harmony, an emotion that leaves you speechless surges forth. What lies beyond climbing the 398 steps is the ultimate scenery that symbolizes the beauty of Japan.

The Three Great Cherry Blossoms of Japan

The Three Great Cherry Blossoms of Japan

Along with the famous spots in the Kanto region, we will also introduce the “Three Great Cherry Blossoms of Japan” that you will want to see at least once in your lifetime.

1. Hirosaki Park (Aomori Prefecture)

This is one of the leading famous spots in the Tohoku region, where about 2,600 cherry trees, including some of Japan’s oldest Yoshino cherry trees, bloom in full glory. Not only the period of full bloom but also the beauty of the blossoms as they fall is exceptional. The “Hana-ikada” (flower raft), where cherry blossom petals completely cover the moat like a pink carpet, is a spectacular spring view that captivates the world.

2. Mount Yoshino (Nara Prefecture)

Since ancient times, it has been called “Hitome Senbon” (a thousand trees at a single glance) and is known as the best cherry blossom mountain in Japan. Approximately 30,000 Shiro-yamazakura trees bloom in order from the foot to the summit, dyeing the entire mountain in a pale pink gradation. The scenery woven by the cherry blossoms and the sacred atmosphere as a holy site for Shugendo is truly a soul-stirring beauty.

3. Takato Joshi Park (Nagano Prefecture)

In this place praised as the “No. 1 Sakura under Heaven,” you can admire the endemic species “Takato-kohigan-zakura” that blooms only here. There are about 1,500 lovely pink flowers that are slightly smaller and deeper in color than the Yoshino cherry blossoms. Against the backdrop of the remaining snow on the Alps, the scenery that gorgeously envelops the entire park is, in a word, breathtaking.
